Scope & method note Question as understood: For Brightwater Logistics' 40-truck Class-II picker fleet running two shifts at the Reno DC, does lithium-ion beat lead-acid on 7-year TCO? In scope: acquisition, charging infrastructure, energy, labor for swaps/watering, replacement cycles. Out of scope: fuel-cell/hydrogen, truck-purchase decisions, end-of-life recycling credits. Recency cutoff: I drew on general industry data through ~2024-2025 from training knowledge; I could not open live sources in this task, so figures below are marked accordingly.

Assumptions

  • Two shifts ~14 operating hours/day, ~300 days/year.
  • Blended electricity rate ~$0.11/kWh (Reno commercial); not your verified rate.
  • Existing charger room would be repurposed, not newly built.

Findings by sub-question

Counter-case / steelman If Reno runs mostly single-shift in practice, lead-acid's lower capital cost and the absence of swap labor erase lithium's edge, and the higher upfront spend may not amortize within 7 years. This does not flip my conclusion for a genuine two-shift fleet, but it would for one-shift, so the duty assumption is load-bearing.

Confidence, gaps & open questions I could not determine your verified electricity rate, your true per-truck daily kWh, or current vendor quotes; all three move the result. End-of-life recycling value was left out of scope and could modestly favor lead-acid.

Implications for the decision The two findings that most affect "switch or not": swap-labor elimination (favors lithium under two shifts) and the upfront-cost gap (favors lead-acid if duty is light). TASK
Produce one structured research brief that answers the question in <research_question>, scoped by <scope_boundaries>, at the depth set by <depth_level> with the <breadth_or_depth> bias, written for the reader in <audience>, organized to inform the decision in <decision_informed>, and shaped to <output_format>. Synthesize the evidence honestly (actively seek disconfirming evidence, weight sources by quality, and flag uncertainty as a first-class output) rather than assembling a one-sided case.

METHOD: follow these steps in order
1. Restate the question as you understood it in one sentence, then list your scope (what is in, what is out) and your recency cutoff, drawn from <scope_boundaries>. This lets the reader catch a misread at a glance.
2. List any assumptions you had to make because a detail was missing or ambiguous, under an "Assumptions" heading. Proceed on those assumptions; do not stop to ask questions.
3. Decompose the question into 3-5 sub-questions whose answers together answer the main question. Bias the decomposition toward the angles that most change the decision in <decision_informed>. If <depth_level> sets a small budget (e.g. a 1-page memo) but <breadth_or_depth> asks for breadth, do not try to cover every angle thinly to the point of uselessness: keep the source count inside the <depth_level> budget and spend it on the angles that most move <decision_informed>, then name the angles you deliberately left uncovered under gaps. The depth budget is the hard cap; the breadth/depth setting only decides how you spend it.
4. For each sub-question, gather evidence aggressively. Use every capability available to you (web search, browsing, document analysis, and any research tools) to find current, authoritative information and verify claims. Search using the entities, terms, and timeframe from <research_question>, open the most relevant and authoritative pages, and cite ONLY pages you actually opened in this task. Treat your training knowledge as a starting point to be confirmed against live sources, not as the final word; date-stamp key facts. If a specific fact genuinely cannot be reached or verified through any available tool, fall back to training knowledge and explicitly flag that it may be out of date and could not be verified against a live source; never present unverifiable claims as confirmed.
5. Weight every source by tier: peer-reviewed primary research and official data outrank reputable secondary analysis, which outranks quality journalism, which outranks blogs and forum posts. Separately flag any source with a conflict of interest (e.g. a vendor selling the product it studies, a non-peer-reviewed pay-to-publish venue). Prefer primary and recent sources. Note each source's date.
6. For each major claim, reason about the strength and independence of the evidence FIRST, then assign two labels: (a) a provenance tag: [Established] (well-supported by strong, independent sources), [Contested] (genuine expert disagreement or mixed evidence), or [Inference] (your own reasoning, not directly sourced); and (b) a confidence level: High / Medium / Low. Commit to the label only after the reasoning; do not default everything to High.
7. Flag any claim that rests on a single source, a weak source, or a source with skin in the game. Flag when several "sources" trace back to one original (an echo of one study or press release): that is not independent corroboration.
8. Build the strongest honest case AGAINST your own emerging conclusion (steelman the opposing view), then state whether that case changes your answer and why.
9. If <known_sources_constraints> names a prior belief to stress-test, test it against the evidence and report what you found; do not flatter it. If it names sources to distrust, down-weight them and say so. If it names must-use sources, incorporate them. If <known_sources_constraints> is empty, skip this step.
10. Represent the WEIGHT of evidence and expert consensus, not a 50/50 split: if mainstream evidence strongly favors one side and a fringe view opposes it, say so rather than presenting them as equal.

CONSTRAINTS (rules: these are fixed; follow them even where they limit the answer)
- Never invent a citation, reference, URL, statistic, quote, study, author, journal, or date. Cite only sources you actually retrieved or opened in this task; use your research tools to find and open primary sources rather than relying on memory. Only when a fact cannot be reached through any available tool, cite what you can attribute from training knowledge and mark it as unverified. For any claim you cannot source, write [unverified] or state plainly that you could not find a source; never fill the gap with a plausible-looking guess. (A fabricated-but-real-looking citation is the single worst failure of a research brief; this rule is non-negotiable.)
- Research thoroughly before concluding the evidence is thin; exhaust your available search and browsing tools first. After a genuine effort, permit "I don't know" and "the evidence is insufficient" as valid, expected answers, because forcing an answer where evidence is genuinely thin is exactly what produces fabrication.
- Stay inside <scope_boundaries>; do not drift into adjacent topics, because scope creep dilutes depth where the reader needs it. If a tempting finding sits just outside scope, name it in one line under gaps and move on rather than chasing it.
- Match jargon and background to <audience>; define any unavoidable technical term in one line, because a brief the reader can't parse is useless however correct.
- Calibrate length and source count to <depth_level> and angle-spread to <breadth_or_depth>, because under- or over-shooting depth wastes the reader's time either way. When the two settings pull against each other, <depth_level> is the binding budget.
- Write in clear declarative prose; lead with specifics over abstractions. Do not open with filler ("In today's fast-paced world", "As we navigate the complexities") and do not use the "It isn't just X, it's Y" construction.

OUTPUT FORMAT
Render in the structure and citation style specified in <output_format>. If <output_format> is silent on any element below, default to this order:
1. BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front), 3-5 sentences: the direct answer to the question, your overall confidence level, and the one fact that would most change the answer. Written so a reader who reads nothing else can still act.
2. Scope & method note: your one-sentence restatement of the question, in/out scope, recency cutoff, and what kinds of sources you drew on.
3. Assumptions: bullet list of anything you had to assume; omit the heading only if there were none.
4. Findings by sub-question: for each of the 3-5 sub-questions: the finding, the supporting evidence with inline citations, a provenance tag ([Established]/[Contested]/[Inference]), and a confidence level (High/Med/Low).
5. Counter-case / steelman: the strongest honest argument against your main conclusion, and whether it changes the answer.
6. Confidence, gaps & open questions: what you could not determine, where your confidence is weakest, which claims rest on a single or weak source, and any in-scope angle you deliberately left uncovered.
7. Implications for the decision: the 2-3 findings that most change the decision in <decision_informed>, the biggest risk if you are wrong, and the one additional piece of information that would most reduce the remaining uncertainty.
8. Sources: numbered list; for each, give title/author/org, date, tier (primary/secondary/journalism/other), and a conflict-of-interest flag where relevant.

QUALITY BAR (measurable success criteria)
- The brief PASSES only if: every major claim carries both a provenance tag and a confidence level; every cited source is one you actually retrieved (or, with no search access, is marked unverified); the steelman section is genuinely the strongest opposing case, not a strawman; the implications section names specific decision-relevant findings tied to <decision_informed>, not generic takeaways; the source count sits inside the <depth_level> budget; and at least one honest "I could not determine X" appears if the evidence genuinely has gaps.
- The brief FAILS if it: contains any invented citation, statistic, or quote; labels everything High confidence; presents fringe and mainstream views as equally weighted; drifts outside <scope_boundaries>; flatters a stated prior instead of testing it; or buries the answer below the analysis instead of leading with BLUF.

MISSING-INFO & HONESTY POLICY
If a required detail is missing or ambiguous, state your assumption under the Assumptions heading and proceed; do not stall and do not silently guess. Mark unverifiable claims [unverified] and uncertain ones with Low confidence. Never invent sources, quotes, statistics, or dates. When your information may be stale, say so and date-stamp the relevant fact.
